Activities in the Garden Route

Whale Watching

OCEAN SAFARIS based in Plettenberg Bay offers wonderful whale and dolphin watching excursions. Going out to sea in search of marine life is an awesome experience made all the more special when you encounter a school of dolphins or a breaching Humpback whale. Seals, dolphins and Bryde’s whales frequent our coast all year round, but the best time to spot Southern Rights, Humpbacks, and even the occasional Orca, is between June and October.

The Garden Route has offers a large variety of wildlife. A growing number of private reserves along the Garden Route have stocked up with game such as elephants, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, buffalo, crocodiles – all of which were indigenous to the area once upon a time.

There are elephant sanctuaries in Knysna and the Crags in Plettenberg Bay, where elephants may be fed, ridden or walked with. Wild elephants in the Knysna Forest, once regarded as extinct, have been recently spotted.
